As the sun sets and you need to go outside, the last thing you typically consider is the efficiency of your yard or area lights. But if you are concerned about what you pay for electricity; maybe you should consider its efficiency. If you are still using one of those 175-watt mercury vapor yard lights from dusk until dawn, it is costing you around $100 a year.
New light-emitting diode (LED) technology is providing better dusk-to-dawn lighting with even greater energy savings. LED lighting provides several potential advantages over traditional sources. LED lighting is not only energy efficient; it is also low maintenance and has a high light output. With a projected lifespan of over 50,000 hours, the LED is virtually maintenance free for over 20 years. Another LED advantage is that they contain no mercury, lead, or other known disposal hazards. And unlike mercury vapor, metal halide, and high-pressure sodium lights, LEDs come on instantly without a warm up time or relighting delays.
Perennial is making the transition to LED dusk-to-dawn lighting. Customers now have two LED options to choose from when installing dusk-to-dawn lighting. Both LED fixtures offer direct white light equivalent to sunlight. The 48 watt LED fixture is equivalent to a 100 watt high pressure sodium fixture. The 73 watt fixture is equivalent to 150 watt fixture. Incentives are offered under Perennial’s EnergyWise program when replacing existing fixtures. Perennial will continue to repair existing high pressure sodium fixtures as parts are available. For more information contact the Customer Services Department at 402-362-3355.
